Development of Early Maturing GEM lines with Value Added Traits: Moving U.S. Corn Belt GEM Germplasm Northward
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction: The corn-breeding program at NDSU has been developing early maturing (6595RM) corn since 1933. We have created ‘EarlyGEM’, a continuous effort to incorporate GEM germplasm into the northern U.S. Corn Belt. Our program is one of the few public programs that can still offer a strong emphasis on germplasm improvement, inbred line development, and training of applied plant breeders. The EarlyGEM project has the unique capability for adapting late temperate and tropical genetic materials to the northern U.S. Corn Belt and to increase the number of competitive products utilizing useful genetic diversity. The NDSU corn breeding program has become a GEM cooperator in 1999 and since then a long-term program has been initiated to increase the genetic diversity of hybrids in the U.S. North Central Region.

Evaluation of Advanced GEM Lines for Multiple Insect Resistance and Fumonisin Concentration
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The overall objective of this project is the development of maize varieties with host plant resistance against the Western corn rootworm (WCR), the European corn borer (ECB), and Fusarium by searching for novel resistance genes and alleles available in GEM base populations. The breeding activities comprise intensive evaluation of GEM germplasm for multiple insect and Fusariu...
متن کاملEvaluation of GEM Germplasm for Multiple Insect Resistance and Fumonisin Concentration
The Western corn rootworm (WCR) and the European corn borer (ECB) are serious pests of maize in the U.S. Secondary infections with Fusarium verticillioides, F. proliferatum, and F. subglutinans occur after ECB larvae feeding, causing ear rots and contamination with fumonisin, a mycotoxin associated with severe animal and human health disorders. The tolerance of maize germplasm adapted to the Mi...
متن کاملThermal Starch Properties in Corn Belt and Exotic Corn Inbred Lines and Their Crosses
More knowledge is needed about variability of starch functional traits in adapted and exotic germplasm and possible genetic effects of these traits before conducting rigorous inheritance studies and breeding programs for starch quality. We studied and compared the range of variability for starch functional traits in a set of Corn Belt inbred lines with a set of exotic inbred lines from Argentin...
متن کاملGEM Germplasm – Unlocking Maize Diversity for Improving Host Plant Resistance against West Corn Rootworm and Other Biotic Stresses
The Western corn rootworm (WCR) is a serious pest of maize in the U.S. and of growing importance in Europe. Soil insecticides, the use of transgenic maize hybrids producing a Bt toxin, and the rotation of maize with other crops are successfully used to manage WCR populations. However, the occurrence of WCR populations resistant to insecticides and adapted to cultural practices raises the questi...
متن کاملMaize Aflatoxin Accumulation Segregates with Early Maturing Selections from an S2 Breeding Cross Population
Maize breeders continue to seek new sources of aflatoxin resistance, but most lines identified as resistance sources are late maturing. The vast difference in flowering time makes it hard to cross these lines with proprietary commercial lines that mature much earlier and often subjects the reproductive phase of these resistant lines to the hottest and driest portion of the summer, making silkin...
